David Beckham has an option to buy an MLS franchise when his five-year Los Angeles Galaxy contract expires after the 2011 season, according to a CBS 60 Minutes profile scheduled to air Sunday. The program was to report the option was granted to the 32-year-old midfielder and his manager, Simon Fuller. Beckham, who joined the Galaxy last season, could make his 100th international appearance for England in next week’s friendly at France. The Galaxy opens the MLS season March 29 at Colorado. Neither the league nor the Galaxy would comment. Beckham signed a five-year contract that pays him $5.5 million annually, plus a share of revenues from ticket, merchandise and concessions sales. Limited by injuries, Beckham played eight MLS and tournament games in his first season with the Galaxy, getting one goal and three assists while making four starts.

Red Bull New York announced on Thursday that Major League Soccer has signed midfielders Danleigh Borman and Kevin Mesa, goalkeepers Danny Cepero and Caleb Patterson-Sewell and defender John Gilkerson to developmental contracts to play for the Red Bulls. Borman was drafted by the Red Bulls out of the University of Rhode Island in the first round of the 2008 Supplemental Draft, Mesa joined the team on a trial this winter, Cepero, who is in his second year with the team, was acquired in the ‘07 Supplemental Draft, Patterson-Sewell joins the team after spending the past year with the Cleveland City Stars of the USL?s Second Division and Gilkerson was selected by New York in the third round (35th overall) in the ‘08 MLS Supplemental Draft.

Five Cuban soccer players were missing Tuesday night after the under-23 team played against the United States, a team official said Wednesday. The missing men had not reported to the authorities. Zachary Mann, a spokesman for Customs and Border Protection, said it was unlikely the agency would learn the men’s whereabouts until they come forward. The players likely would be granted political protection under a United States policy that allows Cubans who reach American soil to obtain asylum. The Cuban team is playing in regional qualifying games for the Beijing Olympics this August. A Concacaf spokesman declined comment, saying that the situation was under review. Team officials did not identify the five missing players, but they are believed to be: José Manuel Miranda, Erlys García Baro, Yenier Bermúdez, Yordany Alvarez and Loanni Prieto. The Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said the agency had not received missing persons reports from the team, and officers were not called to the team’s hotel to investigate.

Red Bull New York announced on Wednesday that midfielder Dane Richards will be out for three months with a MCL tear in his right knee. The injury, which will not require surgery, was sustained in the Red Bulls’ scrimmage against the Red Bull Salzburg Juniors on March 3. He was re-evaluated by the team’s medical staff on Monday upon returning from Austria. Richards was one of the finalists for the Major League Soccer Rookie of the Year award in 2007. Drafted in the second round, 19th overall in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft out of Clemson University, Richards started in 27 of 30 games for the Red Bulls in his first season, notching two goals and six assists. The Jamaican international has also earned five caps for his country. The Red Bulls season and home opener is scheduled for April 5 against the Columbus Crew at Giants Stadium.

The Colorado Rapids put on a strong showing this afternoon earning a 3-2 win over Ipswich at the Arsenal Training Centre. With the victory, Colorado remains undefeated during preseason play with a 3-0-3 record.The Rapids were aggressieve throughout the first half and came close to finding the back of the net on multiple occasions. With a beautifully played corner kick by midfielder Terry Cooke into the area, midfielder Rafael Gomes netted the contest’s first score with a finishing header in the 23rd minute. But during the second half, on the 57th minute Ipswich equaled the score at 1-1. Colorado quickly responded just two minutes later when midfielder Nick LaBrocca struck the ball from nearly 20+ yards out giving the Rapids the lead once again at 2-1. With the Ipswich attack coming on strong once again, the Colorado defense suffered a hand ball allowing the Tractor Boys to tie the score at 2-2 in the 68th minute on a penalty kick. Once again, the Rapids were able to quickly response a second time in the half answering the Ipswich goal in the 74th minute. Defender Tim Ward played a long ball from the Colorado defense laying it perfectly in for forward Jovan Kirovski, who had no problem striking the back of the net to lift the Rapids to victory.

New York Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osorio received news that winger Dane Richards will be out more than a month with a sprained MCL on his right knee, according to a report on BigAppleSoccer.com. “It’s a lot worse than we expected,” Osorio told the website. Richards’ injury occurred during a scrimmage on Monday with sister club Red Bull Salzburg on New York’s preseason trip to Austria. New York lost the match 1-0 to the Salzburg reserves. Apparently, the match was extremely chippy with numerous dirty tackles and hard fouls being committed, including the one that sidelined Richards, which earned Pichler Harald a yellow card in the 14th minute. The injury means Richards, who was a finalist for MLS rookie of the year last season, will probably miss New York’s first regular season match vs. the Columbus Crew at Giants Stadium on April 5.

Chicago acquired former Colorado defender Brandon Prideaux in Tuesday’s MLS Waiver Draft. “We are glad to bring a veteran such as Brandon into our squad,” said Chicago coach Denis Hamlett. “My staff and I felt we needed to bring in another proven defender with experience in big games, and Brandon fits the criteria.” Prideaux started all 21 games he played in for Colorado last season. “I’m excited to join Chicago as it’s a winning organization with a tradition of success,” said Prideaux. “I’m excited to get down to Mexico and join the team as soon as possible. I know there’s a lot of talent on the team and some good veteran players in the back.” The Fire also waived Tim Conway, Jeff Curtin, Floyd Franks, Jordan Russolillo, and Osei Telesford.

Toronto FC announced Friday that the team has acquired midfielder Kevin Harmse from the Los Angeles Galaxy, in exchange the Galaxy will receive Toronto’s fourth round pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft.The Canadian International spent one season with the Galaxy, appearing in 23 matches in all competitions, scoring twice.Prior to his April 12th signing with the Galaxy, Harmse spent the 2006 season in Europe with FC Nitra of the Slovakian Corgon Liga. The Vancouver native played for the local Whitecaps of the USL 1st Division in 2004, and 2005. Harmse has six caps for Canada, making his debut for the National squad in March 2007 in a friendly against Bermuda. He was also a member of Canada’s roster for the CONCACAF Gold Cup where he made three appearances off the bench in the tournament. He was capped 17 times by Canada’s U-20 National Team in 2002 and 2003, representing his country at the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship in the United Arab Emirates where Canada reached the quarterfinals.
