América’s Arguello comes through with game-winning goal

América’s Arguello comes through with game-winning goal

The Mexican League is renowned for its flowing, attacking style, but little scoring has been on display so far as eight Mexican teams vie for two Copa Libertadores spots in the USA-hosted InterLiga. Three goals in four matches is the aggregate after Club America beat Morelia, 1-0, following a 0-0 tie between Toluca and Atlas Thursday night in the Group A Interliga openers at Robertson Stadium in Houston. Also instead of a worm welcome the teams received a got bone-chilling 40 degrees temperature and a thin crowd of  9,354 at Robertson Stadium. It was a  good thing that Alejandro Arguello and Guillermo Ochoa came through. Arguello scored a spectacular first-half goal and Ochoa came up big to save a penalty kick in the second half to help America manage a 1-0 victory over the Morelia Monarcas. More

Sonny Guadarrama, a Texan finds place as pro in Mexico

Sonny Guadarrama, a Texan finds place as pro in Mexico

Two years ago, Sonny Guadarrama signed a contract to play professional soccer in Mexico. After toiling in Santos’ lower divisions, the Austin native got the call he had dreamed of in 2006.  Guadarrama’s current club, Morelia, is one of eight that will vie for a spot in South America’s Libertadores Cup through the InterLiga tournament, which kicks off tonight at Pizza Hut Park. Monterrey plays Pumas at 7 p.m., followed by Cruz Azul vs. San Luis. InterLiga will also be played in Houston and Carson, Calif. Morelia opens play Thursday in Houston against Mexican power Club America.  Guadarrama, 20, played one year for Campbell University in North Carolina before packing his bags and heading south to try his luck in Mexico. Latching onto a club was Guadarrama’s first goal. He now seeks to become a fixture in Mexico’s top league. The Texan debuted in the first division Nov. 5, 2006. He was traded to Morelia in December.
